Pharmaceutical company Bayer is under legal fire and dealing with an onslaught of lawsuits from women who have had the contraceptive device inserted and are now dealing with painful side effects including uterine perforations, organ damage, infections and migration of the device which can lead to permanent damage of the reproductive organs.

The Mirena IUD lawsuits being filed claim that Bayer Healthcare did not adequately warn those who received the device of all the side effects and complications involved with Mirena. Pharmaceutical companies and failure to warn seems to be a continued problem as the safety of people seems to be less important than the profits of the company.   Part of the promotional activity by Bayer was a “Busy Moms” marketing campaign that involved Mirena IUD parties thrown at restaurants or at people’s homes. The parties involved a speaker that would talk about the benefits of Mirena, including claims of improved sex lives and that it would help women to “look and feel great”. This resulted in a warning letter from the FDA about these claims Bayer was making.

Mirena IUD Side Effects and Complications

While there is not yet a recall of the product, if the numbers of women who report problems continues to increase, the likelihood of a Mirena IUD recall in the future is highly probable. Many women are experiencing painful side effects from the product. The most common Mirena side effects include:

  • Uterine Perforation
  • Organ Damage
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Ovarian Cyst
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Intrauterine pregnancy
  • Miscarriages
  • Infertility
  • Infections
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Irregular Bleeding
  • Headaches

While some are commonly found with many prescription drugs, as you can see from the list some of these are serious in nature. There are even studies on whether the product is tied to cancer. If you are using Mirena for birth control and were unaware of these issues and have yet to experience any side effects, it may be wise to consult with your physician anyways as a preventative measure.
